Horse Of A Different Color

An interactive learning installation at the Art Institute of Chicago introduces audiences to museum conservation techniques and processes. The installation centers around two historic carousel horses, Woody and Old Paint. The story of their imperfections reveals the crucial role of conservation scientists in museums, who study, care for, and protect objects over time.

Assignment

Create a kid-friendly visual direction inspired by the two carousel horses on display and the instruments used by conservators.

Design and illustrate a carousel topper, vinyl graphics, and a work booklet.

Ideation

Incorporating shapes and colors found throughout the original Drexel Carousels and combining them with the geometric visual language of mid-century learning materials.
